Steven looks forward to helping golfers putt better with his CPI knowledge
Braintree Golf Club professional Steven Hambling is a man on a mission. In less than a week, Steven completed the Certified Putting Instructor Course (CPI) online and in no time was applying his new found knowledge and expertise to his clients on the putting green.
“From the minute I sat down at my computer, I found the CPI course very interesting and it clarified different aspects of putting for me. It was simple and straightforward and gave me the confidence to apply it and explain it to my students. I really enjoyed the course, videos and text were extremely helpful and well explained.”
The Certified Putting Instructor (CPI) Course, is a certification based on scientific principles offered by U.S. based Frankly Golf and the PGA with the goal of helping golfers putt better, adding an extra dimension to the services that the golf professional can deliver.
Steven started playing golf at 7 years old and played up to county level before turning professional immediately after leaving school. By 21 he was a fully qualified professional and has been at Braintree GC in Essex for the last 6 years. He had completed some coaching courses but this was the first putting course he had taken.
“I wanted to improve my coaching knowledge. Putting is a very precise movement and I believe it is extremely important to get the basics correct to begin with. Elements such as the distance away from the ball that the student is positioned are simple, but are very important to pass along and be aware of as a coach.”
Just a few weeks after completing the CPI course, Steven has already given multiple putting lessons.
“The students I have taught so far have really enjoyed the experience. I am delivering my putting lessons with much more confidence because I have the evidence backing up what I am saying and this is in turn giving my students more confidence and belief in what I am saying to them. I have also been giving them some putting drills from the CPI course and they are very happy when they leave.”
Steven is not stopping there. He has already organized putting demo days and will be offering some putting evenings to share his new knowledge with his club members.
“I see putting as a niche market that I can specialise in and I want to make sure I have the best information to pass along to my students and the CPI Course has enabled me to do that.”
Upon learning of Steven’s completion of the CPI Course, Frank Thomas, founder of Frankly Golf, former longtime USGA Technical Director and inventor of the graphite shaft, said,
“Steve is a model CPI student and has quickly realised the benefits that the CPI course was designed around. His work ethic and recognition for the need to develop his knowledge base will stand him in good stead for a bright and successful future.”
